By the end of this quarter, the European Commission is expected to publish the delegated acts outlining the requirements for Digital Product Passports (DPPs) for textile products. While this milestone is eagerly awaited, we already took steps within the [Re]value project. We see it as an opportunity to provide better data for interested parties, communicate about the environmental impact of yarns and support the transition to more circular textiles.

Is this a compliance exercise?
Not if you ask us. Digital Product Passports are becoming legislation, but their essence is about much more than checking boxes; they are a powerful tool for accelerating the shift toward a circular economy. By capturing and sharing essential data about a product’s use cycle—from material composition to end-of-use options—DPPs enable brands, manufacturers, and consumers to make informed, sustainable choices. We can take steps in the circular economy by pushing a range of buttons, from designing products for longevity and recycling to organising reverse logistics and take back systems. DPPs help realise that potential, as all of these initiatives require better information to be shared throughout the supply cycle.

The role of Digital Product Passports in [Re]value
Within the [Re]value project, FBBasic creates DPPs on their platform – Cirmar. Within the project, we focus on documenting the material composition of yarns and prototyping products that utilise these yarns. By comparing these innovative materials with conventional alternatives, we demonstrate the tangible benefits of investing in sustainable, bio-based fibers. This approach not only takes and advance on the compliance demands that are coming our way but also highlights the value of choosing materials that reduce environmental impact and enhance recyclability at the end of their use.

What does the DPP-compliance entail?
The upcoming regulation will require textile products to provide specific data points, such as material origins, chemical content, and sustainability credentials. The emphasis is on what information must be shared and how it is accessible—not on prescribing a one-size-fits-all solution. This flexibility allows businesses to integrate DPPs into their existing systems, innovating and making informed decisions regarding sustainability, while at the same time conforming with regulatory standards.

What DPPs can do for the textiles industry
For the textile industry, the advantages of embracing DPPs extend far beyond compliance. By documenting and sharing material data, businesses can showcase the suitability, transparency, and impact of their products. Consumers increasingly demand proof of sustainability, and DPPs provide a clear, standardised way to deliver it. For manufacturers, this means stronger market positioning, improved supply chain collaboration, and a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Written by: FBBasic

The textile industry faces a transformative shift.
